Read the instructions before the first attempt

A medicine name, tablet strength and timing instruction each answer a different question.

Read the label as a set of instructions

A new sildenafil prescription can arrive with several numbers: the amount in each tablet, the quantity supplied and instructions about when to take it. Those numbers have different jobs. The total number of tablets in a shipment does not tell you how frequently to take the medicine, and an advertised monthly pack is not a personal treatment schedule.

MedlinePlus advises taking sildenafil exactly as prescribed and asking the doctor or pharmacist to explain any unclear directions. Before the first use, make sure you understand the prescribed amount, timing and frequency, along with what to do if the medicine does not seem helpful. Do not reconstruct the instructions from a comparison website or another person's experience. [MedlinePlus]

Know what response the medicine is intended to support

Sildenafil helps increase blood flow during sexual stimulation. It does not increase sexual desire or cure ED. That distinction can reduce confusion when an advertisement makes a tablet sound like a complete answer to every sexual concern. If desire, pain, relationship stress or another symptom is part of the problem, describe it during the assessment. [Patient information]

The approved Viagra label describes use before anticipated sexual activity. Its general timing information does not guarantee a precise moment of onset for an individual. Your own instructions may also reflect health conditions or interacting medicines. Our meal and timing notes explain why expectations should allow for context. [Prescribing information]

Resolve a mismatch while the package is still in front of you

If the package, prescription label and online order appear to disagree, contact the dispensing pharmacy before using the medicine. Read out the medicine name, strength and directions exactly as printed. Ask whether the supplied product is an approved tablet or a compounded preparation, and request the relevant patient information. You do not need to guess which description takes priority.

Our guide to sildenafil product names explains why Viagra, Revatio and compounded combinations should not be treated as interchangeable instructions. A shared ingredient is only one part of the prescription's identity.

Have a plan for questions and urgent symptoms

Ask the prescriber which effects can be discussed routinely and which require immediate attention. The Viagra label calls for emergency treatment for an erection lasting more than four hours. Sudden vision loss or a sudden decrease or loss of hearing also needs immediate medical attention; stop taking the medicine and seek care. Chest pain during sexual activity should receive urgent assessment, with the emergency team told when sildenafil was last taken. [Safety information]

For nonurgent questions, keep the pharmacy and prescribing team's contact details with your medicine information. Record any uncertainty rather than adding a dose, borrowing another ED medicine or changing the schedule yourself. The medicine-list guide can help prepare that conversation.
